Practicing and using the 60 minute practice sheets |

QUESTION

I just recently purchased your book today, and have found it to be a useful resource of excersizes, but i am unsure as to how to use your practise schedule, what exactly should i be practicing for 1 hr day? The plan says ten minutes of uninterrupted sixteenth notes, does that mean just an open string? Or one of the excersizes?
I would greatly appreciate some information on what exactly i should be practicing.

Hi Harri,
Sorry for the delay in the response to your request.
OK... Using the practice sheets. If you are working on the synchronization techniques, then you might want to do only 20-30 minutes of practice with the practice sheets. The answer to your question would be yes. Practice the single strings. Practice moving from one string to the next with out stopping. You should be able to do fig. 2-2 and 2-3 at 50-60 bpm’s (beats per minute). CLEANLY!!!
When you’re ready to move to chapter 3, you should be able to do the exercises at 50-60 bpm’s. You might want to then practice 10 minutes of the chapter 2 exercises and then move on to the chapter 3 exercises. If 60 minutes is to long, cut it down to 40 minutes.
The purpose of playing the 16th. notes for 10 minutes with out stopping, is to build stamina, dexterity, picking speed, finger speed, and wrist and finger strength under controlled circumstances. As you progress, you need to use some of your own creativity. Practice the exercises and combine some scales and arpeggios into you practice time. Eventually, you will be practicing your arpeggios and scales with the metronome and at much faster speeds.
As you stretch your picking speed, (from a point where you aren’t making mistakes) your fingers will be building fluidity and so will your picking wrist. These are controlled circumstances. You’re putting you self in a situation where you can play at a comfortable speed where you don’t have any mistakes (flams or muffled sounds) while changing strings or notes.
Your goal is to work your self up to playing 16th. notes at 120 bpm’s CLEANLY and eventually 175-200 bpm’s. It’s a tough challenge, but it can be done as we already know.
